The Gateway to the Wyre Estuary

The Wyre estuary and saltmarshes are key natural resources for local communities and wildlife alike. They are a unique habitat for thousands of species and offer resilience to climate change by storing carbon and floodwater. 

In recognition of the sites’ importance, The Gateway to the Wyre Estuary Project is aimed at improving access to nature and providing nature-based solutions to safe-guard local communities from the impacts of climate change.  

Saltmarshes are valued for their unique habitat. They offer a range of important services for both people and wildlife alike. 

Stanah saltmarsh is found on the edge of the Wyre Estuary, next to the Wyre Estuary Country Park. It is a popular site with the local community and visitors for many recreational uses. It is home to multiple vulnerable species of conservation importance such as Redshank. 

Our project is a collaboration between the Our Future Coast Project and Wyre Council. This work will be completed in two phases aimed at both enhancing Stanah saltmarsh and improving accessibility to nature through public pathway restoration. The project will also provide a nature-based solution to offer resilience to local coastal communities against the negative impacts of climate change. 

Phase 1, through the Gateway to The Wyre Estuary project, is aimed at improving access to nature. We will work to restore and improve sections of the public bridleway between Skippool and Stanah within the Wyre Estuary Country Park. This work will improve accessibility for pathway users and make the path more resilient to climate change.  

Phase 2, delivered via the Our Future Coast project, is aimed at restoring Stanah saltmarsh through vegetation management and ground works. We aim to help alleviate flood risk, local biodiversity, provide greater coastal resilience, offer secure breeding habitat for wetland birds and to ensure site enjoyment for all visitors.
